about

John Robichaux led the premier society orchestra in New Orleans in the years proceeding the birth of jazz. Comprised of the city's finest Creoe musicians they performed European dance music and American cakewalks and rags, the music that served as the building blocks for what would become jazz. His music library is lovingly preserved at Tulane University. Musicologist Tom Hook selected, restored and transcribed a selection of songs from the early 1890's to document the sounds that became the genesis of a new art form. Many of these selections have never been recorded or performed in the century since they were composed.
